Start with a server.

RemoteRead needs an SSH server and permission to read files from it. There is no RemoteRead account to create and no separate service to configure.

Add a connection

  1. Tap + on the server list.
  2. Enter a display name, hostname or IP address, username, port, and optional starting folder.
  3. Choose a password, import an OpenSSH private key, generate a new Ed25519 key, or select no credentials for an external setup such as Tailscale SSH.
  4. Save the server and open it.
  5. Compare the host-key fingerprint with the one from your server, then approve it.

Common questions

The app says the host key is new

This is expected the first time you connect. Compare the fingerprint shown by RemoteRead with the fingerprint reported by your server before approving it.

The host key changed

RemoteRead blocks the connection because a changed host key can indicate that the server was replaced or that the connection is being intercepted. Confirm the new fingerprint with the server administrator before replacing the saved key.

Tailscale SSH will not connect

Choose No credentials when Tailscale handles authentication. Confirm that Tailscale is connected on the device and that its SSH policy allows the selected user to reach the server.

I see an older copy of a document

Pull down to refresh while connected. If the server cannot be reached, RemoteRead may show a protected offline copy and labels it with the time it was loaded.

How do I clear downloaded files?

Open Settings from the server list and tap Clear Document Cache. The cache is also limited to 250 MB and removes older files automatically.

Can RemoteRead change a file?

No. The app has no edit, rename, delete, upload, shell, or command-execution feature.
